Finches (2 Year Olds)

Mondays and/or Fridays, 9 am – 11:30 am

Age Requirement: 2 years old by September 1st

Our Finch class is all about play! For our 2 year olds, we offer two options: 1-day class and 2-day class.

A Day in the Life of a Finch

9 am – 10:05, Arrival & Free Play

At the start of the school day, the children are encouraged to explore and discover age-appropriate activities correlating with our theme for the day in two classrooms. These activities might include painting at an easel, building with blocks, dressing up in costumes, exploring different themed items in the sensory table, making music or looking at a book. Through these different experiences, the children learn to understand important social and developmental skills, such as sharing with other children their age.

While the children are busy exploring, one area of focus for the teacher and the two participating parents is to assist the children with communicating their needs to others. We use both verbal and nonverbal communication techniques to accomplish this goal.

10:05 – 10:15, Clean Up & Gross Motor Play

The children assist with picking up the toys that were available during free play. Once the toys are put away, children gather in the climbing room to engage in gross motor activities led by the teacher.

10:15 – 10:25, Snack Time

The children, parents and teacher gather for a small snack, such as crackers, pretzels or dried fruit. Children are encouraged to pour water into their own drinking cups, appropriately communicate their needs, and pass the snack baskets to one another. Snacks are provided by the school, but families are welcome to bring alternative healthy snacks to share with the class. Food sensitivities and allergies are assessed at the beginning of each year.

10:25 – 10:45, Quiet Reading & Circle Time

Each child chooses a book and finds a place on the rug to read quietly before circle time begins. Circle time begins and ends with a familiar song. It includes daily repeated songs, as well as movement, music finger play and a story.

10:45 – 11:30, Outdoor Play & Dismissal

As long as the temperature is above zero and it is not storming, children experience outdoor play on the school’s well-equipped, half-acre playground every day. Children are free to play on all playground equipment. They also have access to tricycles, sand toys, sleds and other seasonal toys. Parents and teacher are present around the playground to ensure a safe and fun playtime.
